hurricane issac affects florida garbage services

Waste collection services have been suspended in several Gulf Coast municipalities in anticipation of Hurricane Isaac’s landfall.

Isaac is on track to strike land early Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center. That date marks the seven-year anniversary of another Gulf Coast disaster, Hurricane Katrina. Isaac is expected to be weaker than Katrina, but could still reach wind speeds of 100 miles per hour.

Waste Management, which has suspended service in several municipalities across Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi, urges residents to cease yard maintenance and construction activities that could produce debris, and to secure loose trash and garbage and recycling containers, according to its website.

“Waste Management implemented its hurricane response plan as soon as this storm became a threat to the area,” Joni Savoye, district manager for Waste Management in the metro New Orleans area, said in an article on Louisiana’s WWLTV.com. “We will begin the work of directing WM employees and their families to appropriate hurricane preparations and implement the task of staging our trucks and equipment for safe keeping as the storm passes through. This will allow us to move quickly to restore collection services … as soon as weather and road conditions permit.”
